What is Holistic Dentistry?

Holistic dentistry is often considered as an unconventional or alternative way to prevent and treat teeth and gum problems. This approach includes non-invasive and nonsurgical practices in treating gum disease and other dental issues.

Conventional vs holistic dentistry

In conventional dentistry, the focus is solely on dental health. On the other hand, holistic dentistry focuses on the entire person, where holistic here often means integrated and interconnected.

For example, when we have a toothache or gum disease, our overall health can also be affected (the view in holistic dentistry). There might be a nutritional, emotional or spiritual imbalance which resulted in pain or illness. As a result, the treatment should also include the nutritional, emotional and spiritual aspects (focusing on the entire person).

In contrast, conventional dentistry goes straight to the problem using scientifically proven methods. As mentioned earlier, the focus is solely on dental health (no mention of emotional or spiritual aspects).

In addition, conventional dentistry has undergone several tests and rigorous analysis and reviews. It’s especially the case in treating severe dental infections that can endanger people’s lives (e.g. tooth abscess). These cases require immediate medical attention to stop the infection from spreading to the jaw, throat and other parts of the body.

Is holistic dentistry safe?

We might see holistic treatment as more complete, integrated and comprehensive because it touches several aspects of our being. However, there’s little research about holistic dentistry’s effectiveness, safety and long-term effects. Also, there’s not much consistent evidence whether it’s better than traditional dental care.

It’s still true that our oral health affects our overall health (including our self-esteem and emotions) and vice versa. Our oral health can also affect our total quality of life especially if we’re always experiencing discomfort in our teeth and gums. To solve that problem, it’s always best to get expert advice from professionals and use scientifically proven methods. This way, the problem won’t get worse and the approach will be straightforward, safe and effective.
