At Sky Dental, we can help you with both tooth restoration, and cosmetic repairs, ensuring you  have a healthy and beautiful smile that you can be proud of.

We offer dental crowns and veneers as two popular options for patients looking to improve the look of their teeth, and our skilled team will work with you to determine which is the best solution for your particular needs.

Dental crowns are designed to cover and protect a damaged or decayed existing tooth, and can also be used to improve the appearance of a misshapen or discoloured natural tooth. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are designed to cover the front surface of the teeth, and can be used to correct crooked or chipped teeth, and other imperfections such as cracks and gaps.

A dental crown may also be used as part of a root canal treatment or dental implant if the entire tooth needs to be replaced (eg if there is too much tooth decay etc), and veneers are often used without the addition of an associated crown. The two can be used together or separately as required. For example, when applied to natural teeth, crowns are more likely to be applied to molars, whilst veneers make more sense for forward facing teeth.

OPTIONS FOR DENTAL CROWNS

There are a number of different materials that can be used for a dental crown. While you are waiting for your permanent crown to be made (usually takes a week or two), you’ll receive a temporary crown. Porcelain and ceramic crowns are more popular option than stainless steel crowns as they better match the natural colour of your teeth and are less likely to cause irritation to adjacent gums.

The dental crown procedure is usually completed in two visits to our office. During the first visit, the tooth will be prepared and a mold or impression will be made. This will be used to create your permanent crown. A temporary crown will be placed over the prepared tooth until your next visit.

At your second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed and your permanent crown will be checked for fit. If everything looks good, the crown will be cemented into place.

The most common materials used for permanent crowns are:

  • Porcelain. Porcelain is great because it looks very natural and can be matched to the colour of your surrounding teeth. It is also quite strong, making it a good choice for molars.
  • Ceramic. Ceramic crowns are another option that can provide a very natural look. They are made from a type of porcelain that is infused with metal, making them stronger than traditional porcelain crowns.
  • Gold. Gold crowns are a good choice for back teeth as they are very strong and durable. They are also less likely to chip or break than other materials.
  • Stainless steel. Stainless steel crowns are often used on baby teeth or primary molars, as they are the most affordable option.
  • Composite. Composite crowns are made from a mixture of plastic and ceramic, and can be matched to the colour of your surrounding teeth. They are not as strong as other materials, but are a good choice for front teeth.

OPTIONS FOR DENTAL VENEERS

Dental veneers are made from either porcelain or composite material, and are custom-made to match the colour of your surrounding teeth. Porcelain veneers are more expensive than composite veneers, but they are also more durable and stain-resistant.

The process of fitting a veneer is usually done in two visits. During the first visit, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and send them to a lab where your veneers will be made. They will also prepare your teeth for the veneers by removing a small amount of enamel from the tooth structure.

At your second visit, your veneers will be fitted and bonded to your teeth. Your dentist will make sure they are the right size, shape, and colour before bonding them in place.

You should expect your veneers to last for many years, but they may eventually need to be replaced due to wear and tear.

CARING FOR VENEERS AND CROWNS

It is important to take good care of your dental crowns and veneers to ensure they last for many years. You should brush and floss your teeth as usual and see your dentist for regular checkups and cleans.

It is also important to avoid biting or chewing on hard objects, as this can damage your crowns or veneers.
